Before Toto was formed the members of the group played session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.
The third album of Toto, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their earlier albums and was criticized for the lack of hit singles. In 1985 the group's singer Fergie Fredericksen left, and the band held auditions to choose a new frontman. The band selected guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The band dug through old recordings and tapes to create the special record. The album was well-received by fans and Toto embarked on the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live set titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with the group.
