We examined the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on first-year Japanese university students' mental health by comparing current year's survey results with previous year's results. Accordingly, an online survey was conducted on first-year Gifu University students from April 20 to May 31, 2020. Study results revealed that, despite the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of "high-risk" students and the depression level were lower among the 2020 first-year students compared to previous year's students. However, the 2020 first-year students experienced high academic distress since they had to adapt to an unfamiliar e-learning environment.
Mitigating hospital crowding requires judicious use of inpatient resources, making Emergency Department Observation Units (EDOUs) an increasingly vital destination for patients that are not suitable for discharge. Maximizing the utility of the EDOU hinges on efficient patient transfers and safe provider communication, which may be accomplished with asynchronous handoff and an emphasis on pull-through operations.
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an electronic, asynchronous handoff replacing verbal handoff on transfer times from the Emergency Department (ED) to the EDOU.
A retrospective observational study was performed with patients transferred to the EDOU throughout several process improvement measures focused on asynchronous handoff. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to determine the effect that these process improvements had on the time from EDOU bed assignment to patient transfer.
There were 14,996 EDOU stays during the 20-month period included in the analysis. Time from EDOU bed assignment to patient transfer decreased significantly with all three interventions studied. An auto-page to the clinicians notifying them of a ready bed reduced the mean time to transfer by 10.1min (p<0.0001), asynchronous nursing handoff reduced it by 3.57min (p=0.0299), and asynchronous clinician handoff reduced it by 14.67min (p<0.0001).
Introducing automatic pages regarding bed status and converting the handoff process from a verbal model to an asynchronous, electronic handoff were effective ways to reduce the time from bed assignment to transfer out of the ED for patients being sent to the EDOU.

Bites from nonnative snakes are uncommon, accounting for 1.1% of envenomations reported to poison centers between 2015 and 2018. Here we discuss two monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) envenomations resulting in respiratory failure.
A 30-year-old man and a 40-year-old man were bitten by their captive monocled cobras. At the first hospital, the first patient was mildly hypotensive, transiently bradycardic, and confused. He was intubated for respiratory distress. He was hypertensive to 211/119mm Hg upon arrival to the second hospital. In the Emergency Department, cobra antivenom was administered. He was admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and had an additional bradycardic episode that corrected with atropine. He was extubated after 35h. He was observed for an additional 9h prior to going home, where he recovered without incident. The second patient developed abdominal pain, blurry vision, and dyspnea within 90min of the bite. He was intubated at the first hospital. At the second hospital he receivns by increasing acetylcholine concentrations.This study aimed to evaluate pH effects on moisture loss and meat quality characteristics of dry-aged beef. Strip loins from six normal pH carcasses (pH = 5.47 ± 0.02) and dark cutting (DC) strip loins from six high pH carcasses (pH = 6.69 ± 0.09) were obtained. One strip loin from each carcass was dry aged and one was wet aged, giving four treatments DRY, DRY-DC, WET, and WET-DC. Loins were aged for 42 d. Ultimate pH did not affect the rate or amount of moisture loss, trim loss, yield, or tenderness in dry-aged beef (P > 0.05). In general, DC steaks had the lowest lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) values, regardless of aging method (P less then 0.05). Flavor characteristics of DC were not improved by dry aging when compared to dry-aged loins from carcasses with normal pH.The objective was to determine structural and physicochemical properties of beef emulsion modeling systems prepared with native breadfruit flour and four different extruded breadfruit flours. Replacement of beef with breadfruit flour (either native or extruded) did not significantly change cooking loss or instrumental redness values of cooked meat emulsions. Interestingly, replacement of beef with the fully gelatinized extruded breadfruit flours altered viscosity during heating as indicated by lower values for storage modulus (44.75% to 62.53% decrease compared with control) and lower values for loss modulus (25.90% to 52.54% decrease compared with control). This resulted in meat emulsions with a significant reduction in textural hardness (28.78% to 37.62% decrease compared with control).Peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) are gaining considerable attention as anti-neoplastic agents. However, their development is often laborious and time-consuming. Herein, we have developed and preclinically evaluated three PDCs with gemcitabine as the anticancer cytotoxic unit and D-Lys6-GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone; GnRH) as the cancer-targeting unit. These units were tethered via acid-labile programmable linkers to guide a differential drug release rate from the PDC through a combination of ester or amide and "click" type oxime ligations. The pro-drugs were designed to enable the selective targeting of malignant tumor cells with linker guided differential drug release rates. We exploited the oxime bond responsiveness against the acidic pH of the tumor microenvironment and the GnRH endocytosis via the GnRH-R GPCR which is overexpressed on cancer cells. The challenging metabolic properties of gemcitabine were addressed during design of the PDCs. We developed a rapid (1 hour) and cost-effective "click" oxime bond ligation platform to assemble in one-pot the 3 desired PDCs that does not require purification, surpassing traditional time-ineffective and low yield methods.
