We investigated canine squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) samples from 15 dogs and classified them histopathologically according to the degree of differentiation. bFGF, VEGF-C, TGF-β, PDGF-A, PDGF-C and PDGFR-α expressions were assessed using immunohistochemistry to determine the roles of growth factors during SCC. We found that TGF-β1 immunolabeling was elevated significantly compared to healthy controls in SCC originating from nailbeds, while expression of other growth factors did not change significantly. Our findings might explain the role of TGF-β1 in the infiltrative and malignant behavior of SCC originating from nailbeds.Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) driver mechanisms are obscured to clinical multielectrode mapping approaches that provide partial, surface-only visualization of unstable 3-dimensional atrial conduction. We hypothesized that transient modulation of refractoriness by pharmacologic challenge during multielectrode mapping improves visualization of hidden paths of reentrant AF drivers for targeted ablation. Methods and Results Pharmacologic challenge with adenosine was tested in ex vivo human hearts with a history of AF and cardiac diseases by multielectrode and high-resolution subsurface near-infrared optical mapping, integrated with 3-dimensional structural imaging and heart-specific computational simulations. Adenosine challenge was also studied on acutely terminated AF drivers in 10 patients with persistent AF. Ex vivo, adenosine stabilized reentrant driver paths within arrhythmogenic fibrotic hubs and improved visualization of reentrant paths, previously seen as focal or unstable breakthrough activation pattern, for targeted AF ablation. Computational simulations suggested that shortening of atrial refractoriness by adenosine may (1) improve driver stability by annihilating spatially unstable functional blocks and tightening reentrant circuits around fibrotic substrates, thus unmasking the common reentrant path; and (2) destabilize already stable reentrant drivers along fibrotic substrates by accelerating competing fibrillatory wavelets or secondary drivers. In patients with persistent AF, adenosine challenge unmasked hidden common reentry paths (9/15 AF drivers, 41±26% to 68±25% visualization), but worsened visualization of previously visible reentry paths (6/15, 74±14% to 34±12%). AF driver ablation led to acute termination of AF. Conclusions Our ex vivo to in vivo human translational study suggests that transiently altering atrial refractoriness can stabilize reentrant paths and unmask arrhythmogenic hubs to guide targeted AF driver ablation treatment.High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) can be present and cooperate with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to promote the onset and/or progression of various cancers including cervical, breast, head and neck as well as colorectal. In this investigation, we explored the co-prevalence of high-risk HPV and EBV in 74 breast cancer tissues from Qatari women using polymerase chain reaction. We found that high-risk HPV and EBV are present in 48/74 (65%) and 36/74 (49%) of the cases, respectively. While we noted that the presence of HPV presence is associated with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) (p = .008), however, the presence of EBV did not correlate with any breast cancer subgroup. Moreover, our data revealed that high-risk HPV and EBV are co-present in 35/74 (47%) of the samples and their co-presence is significantly associated with tumor grade (p = .04) and tumor stage (p = .04). These data indicate that HPV and EBV are commonly co-present in breast cancer and their association could be linked with a more aggressive tumor phenotype. Thus, further investigations are essential to understand the underlying mechanisms of HPV and EBV cooperation in breast carcinogenesis.The question of how people's preferences are shaped by their choices has generated decades of research. In a classic example, work on cognitive dissonance has found that observers who must choose between two equally attractive options subsequently avoid the unchosen option, suggesting that not choosing the item led them to like it less. However, almost all of the research on such choice-induced preference focuses on adults, leaving open the question of how much experience is necessary for its emergence. Here, we examined the developmental roots of this phenomenon in preverbal infants (N = 189). In a series of seven experiments using a free-choice paradigm, we found that infants experienced choice-induced preference change similar to adults'. Infants' choice patterns reflected genuine preference change and not attraction to novelty or inherent attitudes toward the options. Hence, choice shapes preferences-even without extensive experience making decisions and without a well-developed self-concept.In a single-blind feasibility pilot randomized controlled trial design, brain injury (BI) participants were recruited from a community rehabilitation centre and randomized into goal-setting using the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS), and goal-setting as usual. Outcomes included the feasibility and acceptability of the VIA-IS, and its use in setting goals in a BI rehabilitation context, and whether it affected types of goals set (International Classification of Functioning (ICF)). Memory for goals two weeks later was measured, and a sample size calculated for a full-scale trial. Twenty-six BI participants were recruited, and randomized to the VIA-IS (n = 13) and control group (n = 13). Two dropped out of the VIA-IS condition, leaving a total n = 24. The majority (92%) of participants rated the VIA-IS as acceptable; both groups described the goal-setting process as "easy". VIA-IS feedback varied; over two thirds (73%) of VIA-IS participants used their VIA-IS results to set goals and described it as "helpful".
