People living with HIV (PLWH) report higher rates of cannabis use than the general population, a trend likely to continue in light of recent policy changes and the reported therapeutic benefits of cannabis for PLWH. Therefore, it is important to better understand cannabis-associated effects on neurocognition, especially as PLWH are at heightened risk for neurocognitive impairment. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of a past cannabis use disorder on current neurocognition in a diverse sample of PLWH. This cross-sectional study included 138 PLWH (age M(SD) = 47.28(8.06); education M(SD) = 12.64(2.73); 73% Male; 71% Latinx) who underwent neuropsychological, DSM-diagnostic, and urine toxicology evaluations. One-way ANCOVAs were conducted to examine effects of a past cannabis use disorder (CUD+) on tests of attention/working memory, processing speed, executive functioning, verbal fluency, learning, memory, and motor ability. Compared to the past CUD- group, the past CUD+ group performed significantly better on tests of processing speed, visual learning and memory, and motor ability (p's  less then  .05). Findings suggest PLWH with past cannabis use have similar or better neurocognition across domains compared to PLWH without past use.
To assess signs of dry eye syndrome in keratoconic eyes following intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation.
Twenty eyes of 20 consecutive patients with keratoconus were assessed for tear film changes following ICRS implantation at 6 months postoperatively. Evaluated parameters included tear osmolarity, non-invasive tear breakup time test (NI-BUT test) and Schirmer test I and II before and after treatment.
No significant changes were found with respect to osmolarity, Schirmer I and II (
 = 0.9,
 < 0.64, and
 < 0.91, respectively). The NITUBT was significantly lower after surgery (
 = 0.04).
Our results suggest that implantation of ICRS does not result in a significant change in tear film osmolarity, or tear film volume nor improves the tear film stability.

Data regarding prevalence and factors associated with depression among HIV-infected individuals in Bhutan remained unknown. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was undertaken among 103 adult (≥18 years) HIV patients attending anti-retroviral therapy clinics located at four different hospitals in Western Bhutan. Depression was assessed using the translated and validated Bhutanese version of centre for epidemiologic studies depression scale-revised. The overall response rate of our participants was 73.6%. Age of our participants ranged from 23 to 79 (mean = 40.29, standard deviation ± 11.22) years. The overall prevalence of depression among our participants was 27.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 19.4-35.9). Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis showed that females (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.96, 95% CI 1.37-11.41) and the poor perceived family support (AOR = 3.31, 95% CI 1.20-9.10) were significantly associated with depression. Divorced, low income, drinking alcohol and CD4 less then 200 cells/mm3 had no associations with depression. We recommend mental health interventions to be integrated into routine HIV care in Bhutan for proper management of depression.Injection drug use-associated HIV outbreaks have occurred in rural communities throughout the United States, which often have limited HIV prevention services for people who inject drugs (PWID). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is one tool that may help fill gaps in HIV prevention programing in rural settings. #link# Oral PrEP has been approved for use, and new PrEP formulations are under development. Research is needed to better understand interest in oral and possible forthcoming PrEP formulations among PWID. We used survey data from 407 PWID in rural West Virginia. We asked if participants had heard of, taken, and were interested in taking PrEP, and about interest in several hypothetical forms of PrEP (arm injections, abdomen injections, implants, intravenous infusions). We estimated the prevalence of interest in each formulation and assessed correlates using Chi-squared tests. A minority had heard of oral PrEP (32.6%), and few had used it (3.7%). Many were interested in using oral PrEP (58.3%). MMRi62 were interested in arm injections (55.7%). Common correlates of interest across PrEP formulations were sexual minority status, comfort talking to a doctor about sex, sex work, and sharing injection equipment. Oral and injectable PrEP have the potential to fill HIV prevention gaps for rural PWID.The Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) Initiative aims to reduce HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Africa. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is offered through DREAMS in Kenya to eligible AGYW in high burden counties including Kisumu and Homa Bay. link2 This study examines PrEP persistence among AGYW in high burden community-based PrEP delivery settings. We evaluated PrEP persistence among AGYW in the DREAMS PrEP program in Kisumu and Homa Bay using survival analysis and programmatic PrEP refill data collected between March through December 2017. Among 1,259 AGYW who initiated PrEP during the study period, the median persistence time in the program was 56 days (95% CI 49-58 days) and the proportion who persisted 3 months later was 37% (95% CI 34-40%). Persistence varied by county (p  less then  0.001), age at PrEP initiation (p = 0.002), marital status (p = 0.008), transactional sex (p = 0.002), gender-based violence (GBV) experience (p = 0.009) and current school attendance (p = 0.001) at DREAMS enrollment. Persistence did not vary with orphan status, food insecurity, condom use, age at first sexual encounter or engagement in age-disparate sex at DREAMS enrollment. Targeted strategies are needed to improve AGYW retention in the PrEP program.Psyllium gum is a hydrocolloid found in the husk of seeds from Plantago ovata. Psyllium husk has been used in traditional medicine in areas of India and China. Its consumption has been shown to provide nutritional benefits, such as the capacity to reduce the glycaemic index, to minimize the risk of cardiovascular diseases, to decrease cholesterol and constipation problems and others. Thus, interest in the incorporation of psyllium in food products is twofold. First, it can be a natural alternative to the use of other gums and hydrocolloids considered additives. Second, it can be used to improve the nutritional properties of products in which it is incorporated. However, for this purpose, it is necessary to add great quantities of psyllium. This review analyses the potential use of psyllium in distinct food products, considering its advantages and inconveniences as well as possible solutions for undesired effects. Among the analyzed products there are bakery products and, in particular, gluten-free breads where psyllium has been used as a gluten substitute. The incorporation of psyllium into dairy products such as yogurts and those derived from fruits, among others, is also addressed.Polyphenols have attracted a lot of global attention due to their diverse biological actions against cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Although extensive research has been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms of pleiotropic actions of polyphenols, this remains unclear. Lipid rafts are distinct nanodomains enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids, present in the inner and outer leaflets of cell membranes, forming functional platforms for the regulation of cellular processes and diseases. Recent studies focusing on the interaction between polyphenols and cellular lipid rafts shed new light on the pleiotropic actions of polyphenols. Polyphenols are postulated to interact with lipid rafts in two ways first, they interfere with the structural integrity of lipid rafts, by disrupting their structure and clustering of the ordered domains; second, they modulate the downstream signaling pathways mediated by lipid rafts, by binding to receptor proteins associated with lipid rafts, such as the 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and others. link3 This study aims to elaborate the mechanism of interaction between polyphenols and lipid rafts, and describe pleiotropic preventive effects of polyphenols.
Gender bias and sexual discrimination (GBSD) have been widely recognized across a range of fields and are now part of the wider social consciousness. Such conduct can occur in the medical workplace, with detrimental effects on recipients. The aim of this review was to identify the prevalence and impact of GBSD in orthopaedic surgery, and to investigate interventions countering such behaviours.
A systematic review was conducted by searching Medline, EMCARE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library Database in April 2020, and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to which we adhered. Original research papers pertaining to the prevalence and impact of GBSD, or mitigating strategies, within orthopaedics were included for review.
Of 570 papers, 27 were eligible for inclusion. These were published between 1998 and 2020. A narrative review was performed in light of the significant heterogeneity displayed by the eligible studies. A total of 13 papers discussed are limited in their scope. As such, the orthopaedic community is obliged to participate in more thoughtful and proactive strategies that mitigate against GBSD, by improving female recruitment and retention within the specialty.Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a fast-developing digital technology with colossal market scope in food and nutrition technology, providing a platform for establishing unique food products with enhanced sensory and nutritional value for a particular end-user. Cultured meat is the concept of producing meat sustainably in laboratory conditions without the sacrifice of animal life and the excessive use of antibiotics. 3D printing could offer unique solutions for the vital issues of cultured meat production; particularly on regulating the protein, fat, and other nutritional content, along with providing realistic texture. This review highlights the immense benefits of 3D printing technology for the scalable and reproducible production of cultured meat products.The phase transition and lattice parameter evolution of O3 structure commonly occurs in O3-type sodium ion battery (SIB) cathodes, which might enlarge the voltage hysteresis and lower the energy efficiency. Given that the cost is one of the issues discouraging the application of SIBs in large-scale energy storage, here we focus on Co/Ni-free Na x Cu0.18Fe0.3Mn0.52O2 (x = 0.8, 0.85, 0.9) and propose a convenient strategy to reduce the voltage hysteresis. It is found that when the Na content is 0.8, the highest energy efficiency of 95.4% after activation is achieved (2.5-4.0 V, 50 mA g-1, the 50th cycle), in addition to a satisfactory capacity retention (about 0.056% decay per cycle). The further characterizations reveal that Na0.8Cu0.18Fe0.3Mn0.52O2 owns a gentle O3-P3 phase transition process and does not undergo O3 phase lattice parameter evolution. The key point lies in the attainability of the O3/P3 composite of the material. This work will provide a simple strategy for the rational design of O3-type cathodes with a high energy efficiency and might offer inspiration to search for layered oxides with a higher O3/P3 critical Na content through element adjustments.
