Different and alternative renewable-source materials, commonly called bioplastics, have been proposed due to the high production and consumption of petroleum-derived plastics and to their high toxicity in the biota. However, their toxicological safety has not yet been assessed in a comprehensive way; therefore, their effects on several animal groups remain completely unknown. Thus, we aimed at testing the following hypothesis the exposure of Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles to polylaic acid biomicroplastic (PLA BioMP) at environmentally relevant concentrations (760 and 15,020 μg/L) induces physiological changes in them. Based on the collected data, biopolymer uptake changed tadpoles' growth and development features, reduced their lipid reserves (it was inferred by decreased triglyceride levels), as well as increased reactive oxygen and nitric oxide species production after 14-day exposure. The proportional increase in total glutathione levels, and in superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, was not enough to counterbalance the production of reactive species. In addition, the two tested concentrations caused cholinesterase effect, which was marked by increased acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. This finding is indicative of the neurotoxic action of PLA BioMP. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the harmful consequences of exposing amphibian representatives to the herein tested biopolymers. Therefore, this finding encourages further studies and contributes to demystify the idea that bioplastics are "harmless" to the aquatic biota in freshwater environments.Bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitutes bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are endocrine disrupting chemicals widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins and thermal papers. The aim of the review was to identify occupational studies using human biomonitoring (HBM) as a tool for bisphenol exposure assessment and to characterize research gaps on the topic as part of the HBM4EU project. Hence, a systematic literature search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was conducted for articles published between 2000 and 27th March 2020 across three databases (PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science). Thirty studies on the occupational HBM of BPA met the inclusion criteria. Regarding BPS and BPF, only 4 and 2 publications were retrieved, respectively. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of the studies selected for BPA were conducted in Asia whereas half of BPS and BPF studies were undertaken in Europe. Studies on BPA in plastic and epoxy resin sectors were infrequent in Europe while Asian data showed higher exposure when the substance is employed as raw material. selleck The main data on BPS were among cashiers while BPF data were available from incinerator workers. Several research gaps have been identified (i) shortage of HBM studies on occupational exposure, especially to BPS and BPF; (ii) different methodological designs making suitable comparisons between studies difficult; and (iii) only few studies conducted on the industrial applications of bisphenols outside Asia. This review highlights the lack of recent occupational HBM studies on bisphenols and the need for a harmonized approach to acquire reliable data. Considering the increasing replacement of BPA by BPS and BPF, it is of relevance to evaluate the exposure to these substances and the impact of the available risk management measures on workers exposure and possible health risk.Ranking assessment of potentially contaminated sites (PCS) provides a great quantity of information (namely the risk screening list) that is usually examined by environmental managers, and therefore reduces the cost of risk management in terms of site investigation. Here we propose an integrated assessment methodology to establish a risk screening list of PCS in China using the Choquet integral correlation coefficient (ICC), which takes the uncertainty and interaction of PCS attributes into explicit account. The proposed method globally considers the importance and ordered positions of PCS attributes while reflecting their overall ranking. The model evaluation and actual validation results demonstrate the success in PCS ranking by the proposed method, which is superior to other methods such as the intuitionistic fuzzy multiple attribute decision-making, the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution, and the weighted average. The resulting spatial distribution of Choquet ICC indicates that high-attention PCS in China are mainly located in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shandong Provinces. This study is the first attempt to conduct a ranking assessment of PCS across China. The proposed assessment method based on Choquet ICC offers a step towards establishing a risk screening list of PCS globally.Condensable particulate matter (CPM) has become the main part of the total primary PM emitted from stationary sources and has aroused increasing concern. In this work, the removal effects of wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) on CPM components were studied. A new CPM-containing flue gas system was designed and used to investigate the condensation characteristics of 16 PAHs, sulfuric acid mist and SO2 conversion into CPM. Some interesting results were obtained and include the following (i) The removal efficiencies of WFGD on both CPM inorganic and organic fraction reached 81.0% and 67.3%, respectively. (ii) The removal efficiency data obtained for C21-C29 and 5-ring PAHs revealed that organic components with high boiling points and low volatility in CPM are easily removed by WFGD. Condensation experimental results indicated that the condensation ratios of PAHs generally increased with the number of fused benzene rings, while the increase of flue gas moisture content might inhibit the conversion of PAHs into CPM. (iii) The concentrations of SO42-, Ca, and Na accounted for 48.7% of CPM inorganic fraction after desulfurization, while Ca was barely removed by WFGD. Condensation experiments indicated that most SO42- in CPM arose from sulfuric acid mist, rather than from sulfate aerosols. Note that only less then 20% of the sulfuric acid mist belonged to the CPM category, which might help to develop specialized deep purification strategy for SO3. In addition, SO2 could cause a high positive bias for the CPM field test although its condensation ratio was only 2.7%. This work provides a basic reference for subsequent CPM formation and reduction researches.Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products from wastewater is very important in water treatment process. Combining photocatalysis with persulfate (PS) could be a good solvent for this problem. Novel perylene diimide derivative (EHPDI) was designed and synthesized. Furthermore, self-assembled EHPDI/TiO2 composite photocatalyst (EPT) was prepared and applied in activating persulfate (PS) under visible light to enhance the photodegradation of pollutants. The presence of the alkyl side chain 2-ethylhexyl optimizes the self-assembly process, enabling the composite material to achieve high performance under low EHPDI loading. Various methods were used to detect the physical and chemical characteristics of EPT. Carbamazepine (CBZ) was chosen to be the model pollutant to study the removal efficiency of EPT/PS system under visible light. Within 30 min, 5.0 mg/L CBZ could be almost completely degraded, and the removal ratio of TOC was 75.2% within 60 min. The SO4-, OH, O2-, 1O2, and h+ were proved to be involved in the removal of CBZ by EPR and quenching experiments. Then, other typical pollutants were degraded by this EPT/PS system, demonstrating this system is suitable for degrading different pollutants. Besides, the degradation paths of CBZ were proposed by HPLC/MS. Finally, the EPT showed excellent recyclability and stability. In Serbia less than 13% of collected municipal wastewaters is being treated before their release in the environment. This includes all municipal wastewater discharges from Belgrade (capital city of Serbia; population 1,700,000). Previous research has identified the impacts of raw wastewater discharges from Belgrade on the Danube River, and this study investigated if such discharges also provided a pathway for SARS-CoV-2 RNA material. Samples were collected during the most critical circumstances that occurred so far within the COVID-19 pandemics in Serbia. Grab and composite samples were collected in December 2020, during the peak of the third wave (in terms of reported cases) at the site which receives the wastewater loads in Belgrade. Grab samples collected upstream and downstream of Belgrade were also analyzed. RNA was quantified using RT-qPCR with primer sets targeting nucleocapsid (N1 and N2) and envelope (E) protein genes. SARS-CoV-2 RNA (5.97 × 103 to 1.32 × 104 copies/L) was detected only in samples collected at the site strongly impacted by the wastewaters where all three applied primer sets gave positive signals. Determined concentrations correspond to those reported in wastewater influents sampled at treatment plants in other countries indicating an epidemiological indicator function of used approach for rivers with high pollution loads in countries with poor wastewater treatment.Microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are universally detected in the marine ecosystem and may exert adverse impacts on marine species. Although under realistic pollution scenarios, PAH pollution usually occurs as a mixture of different PAH compounds, the toxic impacts of PAH mixtures on marine organisms remain largely unknown to date, including their interactions with other emergent pollutants such as MPs. In this study, the single and combined toxic impacts of polystyrene MPs and a mixture of PAHs (standard mix of 16 representative PAHs) on haematic parameters were evaluated in the blood clam Tegillarca granosa. Our data demonstrated that blood clams treated with the pollutants examined led to decreased total haemocyte count (THC), changed haematic composition, and inhibited phagocytosis of haemocytes. Further analyses indicated that MPs and a mixture of PAHs may exert toxic impacts on haematic parameters by elevating the intracellular contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), giving rise to lipid peroxidation (LPO) and DNA damage, reducing the viability of haemocytes, and disrupting important molecular signalling pathways (indicated by significantly altered expressions of key genes). In addition, compared to clams treated with a single type of pollutant, coexposure to MPs and a mixture of PAHs exerted more severe adverse impacts on all the parameters investigated, indicating a significant synergistic effect of MPs and PAHs.Spatial and seasonal heterogeneity in phytoplankton communities are governed by many biotic and abiotic drivers. However, the identification of long-term spatial and temporal trends in abiotic drivers, and their interdependencies with the phytoplankton communities' structure is understudied in tropical brackish coastal lagoons. We examined phytoplankton communities' spatiotemporal dynamics from a 5-year dataset (n = 780) collected from 13 sampling stations in Chilika Lagoon, India, where the salinity gradient defined the spatial patterns in environmental variables. Generalized additive models showed a declining trend in phytoplankton biomass, pH, and dissolved PO4 in the lagoon. Hierarchical modelling of species communities revealed that salinity (44.48 ± 28.19%), water temperature (4.37 ± 5.65%), and season (4.27 ± 0.96%) accounted for maximum variation in the phytoplankton composition. Bacillariophyta (Indicator Value (IV) 0.74) and Dinophyta (IV 0.72) emerged as top indicators for polyhaline regime whereas, Cyanophyta (IV 0.
