Therefore, for any successful PR plan, it is essential to have the right combination of data, intuition, and personal experience. Be sure to read Axia Public Relations’ e-book, "Learn Media Relations from the Media,” for insider tips on best practices for earning media coverage. AllSides does not rate outlets based on accuracy or factual claims — this is a bias chart, not a credibility chart. As such, there is a general correlation between how frequently consumed a publication is on a national level and how many people trust it. It should not be a surprise that people who consume news from an outlet are those who tend to see it as trustworthy.
There’s nothing wrong with having bias or an opinion, but hidden bias misleads and divides us. Just because an outlet is credible doesn’t mean it isn’t biased; likewise, just because an outlet is biased doesn’t mean it isn’t credible. When rating an opinion page, AllSides takes into account the outlet's editorial board and its individual opinion page writers.
The Mirror’s reach was slightly lower in June compared to May, with 24.7 million visitors (a reach of 50% compared to 51% in June). Kızılkaya was selected as a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard in 2019 and was awarded as the Digital Journalist of the Year in 2018 by the Journalists’ Association of Turkey (TGC). Having a master’s degree in journalism, he is currently conducting a PhD research on public trust in digital media at Galatasaray University. Millions of Turks get their news “incidentally” on Google when they search for information and are presented by the algorithm results that are usually dominated by news publishers’ content. As a result, Google’s gatekeeping algorithm — which regulates its organic search results, carousels and the Google News application’s curation — plays a key role in the visibility and discoverability of news content produced by Turkish media outlets.
In [45] the authors analyze the nature of the location field in the Twitter profile. Given that this is an open text field, users not always enter a valid (or even geographic) information. So, a pre-processing of this data is in order if we are making any study involving geolocation of the users based on this field. To help readers understand why sources are placed where they are, Pew Research has created interactive visuals for each outlet. Overall, more of these outlets’ audiences fall to the left of the average respondent than to the right (and many cluster near the middle).
The methods’ effectiveness will largely depend on the level of adoption of the social networks by the mass media as a medium to reach out to their audience and the platform penetration at population level. The only peculiarity of Chile could be its heavy centralization in Santiago. Still, we don’t think that this is a factor (at least not one that favors the methods). Actually, by limiting our analysis to the capital region we have removed, to a large degree, the influence of the centralization factor. We can also see that the profile obtained for each individual player (shown in the shaded area in Fig. 6) differs from that of the news outlets.
It was followed by The Sun (27.1 million people, down 1% month-on-month), The Mirror (25.4 million people, down 2%), and Mail Online (24.1 million people, down 1% month-on-month). Among the largest ten newsbrands by audience size, the fastest-growing was ITV, which we have newly included in our top 50 ranking this month. As with the BBC, some of the audience will include visitors to ITV’s non-news content such as its entertainment programming.
Other sources that appear at the top are the radio programs of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, as well as the Blaze. While consistent liberals trust CNN, NBC News and ABC News at levels similar to — or slightly higher than —respondents overall, these news sources are not the top most trusted among this group. Instead, three public news organizations – NPR (72%), PBS (71%) and the BBC (69%) – are the most trusted sources among those with consistently liberal political values. The New York Times also enjoys a high level of trust from this group (62%). In total, more sources (nine of 36) are trusted by 50% or more of consistent liberals than by any other ideological group.
Comparing the levels of trust between Conservative and Labour voters reveals which outlets are the most divisive politically. However, the BBC is not the outlet with the highest level of ‘net trust’ – that is to say, the number of people who trust a media organisation minus the number of people who distrust it. The organisation that the largest number of people trust is the BBC, with 44% of Britons saying they consider it “very trustworthy” or “trustworthy”. A further 24% deem news from the Beeb to be ‘neither trustworthy nor untrustworthy’, while 21% consider BBC news to be untrustworthy. However, it should be noted that both viral Facebook content of Haber 61 in the list were merely statements of support to the Black Sea province’s popular football team, Trabzonspor. The only other content, produced by Manavgat TV from the Mediterranean province of Antalya, was a heartwarming video news story about local security forces who helped an old farmer to harvest his field during the pandemic. The first part of the study is a quantitative look into Turkey’s top digital media outlets’ current digital reach. Reach’s local news aggregator InYourArea was accessed by 9.3m people (19% reach). Just seven news brands saw an increase in total minutes spent with their content compared to last month.
Despite largely negative opinions about the role digital platforms play in supporting quality journalism in Turkey, independent media executives admit that they have a symbiotic relationship with these companies. “Although I criticize it a lot, Google’s contribution in expanding our reach is substantial. In order to find which outlets are more visible on Google News, we monitored its home page33 in the same period and every hour, recording each media outlet and their content featured by Google in the five main boxes.
This month however, Sky News overtook The Sun to become the fourth-most engaged with news brand in terms of minutes spent with its content m minutes compared to 641m minutes with The Sun. MEPs want the criteria for allocating public funds to media to be publicly available. Google News is an application and website that attracts many avid news readers and drives significant traffic to publishers. In Turkey, too, media outlets try to be more visible on Google News by using various methods, including prominently displaying its widget on their websites.
The Twitter’s API allows to automatically access the flow of tweets and query the system for user profiles, followers and tweeting history. This data availability makes it possible to explore the behavior and interactions of personal and institutional accounts, developing and testing social theories at a scale that was unfeasible few years ago. This is the closest thing we have to a record of the every-day life of over 300 million people (Twitter reported 328 million monthly active users in the first quarter of 2017 [31]). The second filter of the PM is in line with the predictions in Proposition 4(b) in [2]. This filter suggests that in their efforts to align their content with the advertisers’ interests, the media have shifted to a lighter and less controversial programming (e.g., lifestyle, fashion, sports, etc.) [5, 6]. In [7], the author presents some evidence of this, showing, for example, the media’s preference for “soft news” content that is favored by advertisers as it targets a demographic of female and young people.
The audience for the GB News website was up 353% year-on-year to reach 7.2 million, according to data from Ipsos iris. Meanwhile, the screenshot below shows that this is true not only for local targets, like Kavala, but also international scapegoats. The Google searches on January 27, 2021, for George Soros led the Turkish users to conspiracy theory-laden pro-government news websites. The top result was an opinion article from Sabah, which warned the readers to “get ready for Soros’ new attempts” in Turkey by claiming that the businessman was behind the anti-government protests in Russia. The rest of the top five newsbrands by audience size also saw small declines in unique visitors in April. The Sun, the UK’s second-biggest online newsbrand, reached 27.4m (down 1% month-on-month), the Mirror reached 25.9m (down 2% month-on-month), Mail Online 24.6m (down 3% month-on-month) while The Independent reached 22.4m people (also down 3% month-on-month).
The peak was more than 10,000,000 searches for “Kamala Harris” in the aftermath of the presidential elections and “Sean Connery” after the actor’s death. Google picked NPR as the top source for the Harris story and BBC News for Connery. These findings can also be considered in the context of the Turkish government’s latest move to block Twitter for failing to appoint local representatives as required by the new Social Media Law. On Google News, without using the search function, we scraped the homepage every hour for a month, recording the titles, row orders and URLs for five news articles in each of the top five “Headlines” boxes on this platform. Additionally, the initiative shows that radio is an immersive experience, usually listened to while doing something else.
The Cambodian government has a reputation for eliminating civil dissent and opposition; a point demonstrated in early March when the opposition leader, Kem Sokha, was imprisoned for 27 years on treason charges. UN experts criticised Sokha’s trial and conviction as ‘further evidence of an ongoing pattern of the misapplication of laws to target political opponents and any critic of the Government’ in a statement in early March. ‘Repressive laws are routinely misused to restrict civic freedoms and criminalise human rights defenders, trade unionists, youth activists, journalists, opposition politicians and other critical voices’, says Benedict.
And Google’s algorithm in Turkey still channels disproportionally more users to these pro-government newspapers while suppressing the independent outlets in contrary to the popular demand reflected in its own search trends data. Emre Kızılkaya from IPI Turkey had reported in July 2020 that Google’s Top News carousel frequently features hate speech, propaganda and disinformation from pro-Erdoğan media outlets. Kavala has been under arrest for more than three years with no evidence but the conspiracy theories spread by pro-government outlets.

Over the past decade, social media has become an integral part of our lives. Getting your story covered on the television news used to be the best way to tell your clients’ story. And while TV coverage is still relevant, there are some facts you need to know before pitching your stories to TV stations. Publishers could see more success if they use their resources to empower skilled journalists and foster new talent, rather than trying to find people who can fit into an ever evolving editorial strategy. The near-unavoidable nature of online surveillance has presented similarly thorny issues for other privacy-centric organizations.
While the top of the list was largely dominated by legacy media, Newzit, DMGT’s news aggregator which has seen quick success since being launched in 2019, came in twelfth place with an audience of 13.4m people (27% reach). Reach’s local news platform InYourArea had an audience of 11.3m people - 23% reach. A number of newsbrands that came lower down the ranking for reach did much better for engagement per person. The new regulation also restricts foreign currencies other than the euro to safekeeping in physical form or foreign-currency bank accounts for payments abroad or foreign-exchange activities. "Currency exchange can be performed in the Republic of Kosovo only through institutions that are licensed by the Central Bank of Kosovo and offer this service," the regulation said.
