Spontaneous fertility reversion has been documented in cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) plants of several species, influenced in frequency by nuclear genetic background. In this study, we found that MutS HOMOLOG1 (MSH1) mediates fertility reversion via substoichiometric shifting (SSS) of the CMS-associated mitochondrial Open Reading Frame 220 (ORF220), a process that may be regulated by pollination signalling in Brassica juncea. We show that plants adjust their growth and development in response to unsuccessful pollination. Measurable decrease in MSH1 transcript levels and evidence of ORF220 SSS under non-pollination conditions suggest that this nuclear-mitochondrial interplay influences fertility reversion in CMS plants in response to physiological signals. Suppression of MSH1 expression induced higher frequency SSS in CMS plants than occurs normally. Transcriptional analysis of floral buds under pollination and non-pollination conditions, and the response of MSH1 expression to different sugars, supports the hypothesis that carbon flux is involved in the pollination signalling of fertility reversion in CMS plants. Our findings suggest that facultative gynodioecy as a reproductive strategy may incorporate environmentally responsive genes like MSH1 as an "on-off" switch for sterility-fertility transition under ecological conditions of reproductive isolation.Combining qualitative and quantitative methods and data is crucial to understanding the complex dynamics and often interdisciplinary nature of conservation. Many conservation scientists use mixed methods, but there are a variety of mixed methods approaches, a lack of shared vocabulary, and few methodological frameworks. We reviewed articles from 2 conservation-related fields that often incorporate qualitative and quantitative methods land-change science (n = 16) and environmental management (n = 16). We examined how authors of these studies approached mixed methods research by coding key methodological characteristics, including relationships between method objectives, extent of integration, iterative interactions between methods, and justification for use of mixed methods. Using these characteristics, we created a typology with the goal of improving understanding of how researchers studying land-change science and environmental management approach interdisciplinary mixed methods research. We identified 5 types of mixed methods approaches, which we termed simple nested, informed nested, simple parallel, unidirectional synthesis, and bidirectional synthesis. Methods and data sources were often used to address different research questions within a project, and only around half of the reviewed papers methodologically integrated different forms of data. Most authors used one method to inform the other, rather than both informing one another. Very few articles used methodological iteration. Each methodological type has certain epistemological implications, such as the disciplinary reach of the research and the capacity for knowledge creation through the exchange of information between distinct methodologies. To exemplify a research design that can lead to multidimensional knowledge production, we provide a methodological framework that bidirectionally integrates and iterates qualitative and quantitative methods.
Little is known about the palliative care needs of patients awaiting lung transplantation. The aim of this study was to describe these needs in patients undergoing evaluation for or awaiting lung transplantation.
Cross-sectional survey using an adapted version of the Needs at the End-of-life Screening Tool (NEST-13) at a US-based transplant program.
Among the 111 participants, 83.5% were White, 60.0% were female, and almost three-quarters had either restrictive or obstructive lung disease. The greatest palliative care needs included difficulty being physically active (mean 7.9/10; SD 2.6; median 9.0), physical symptoms (mean 7.4/10; SD 2.6; median 8.0), missing work due to illness (mean 6.2/10; SD 4.0; median 8.0), and concerns that life might end (mean 5.1/10; SD 3.6; median 5.0). Participants reported that religious/spiritual beliefs contribute to their sense of purpose (mean 4.1/10; SD 3.9) but had few unmet needs in this area (mean 0.9/10; median 0.0). Only 6.4% reported seeing a palliative care specialist, and 48.2% were unsure what a palliative care specialist is.
There are substantial palliative care needs among lung transplant candidates, particularly physical symptoms and end-of-life concerns. These findings support integrating palliative care and end-of-life discussions in the management of lung transplant candidates.

It is expressed in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) with many different malignancies. The aim of the study was to evaluate PD-1 expression and its prognostic value in tongue cancer. The data of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) patients (N = 81) treated in Tampere University Hospital between 1999 and 2013 were used. Control data consisted of patients with non-malignant tongue mucous membrane lesions (N = 48). The density and intensity of PD-1 + cells were significantly higher in TSCC than in control samples. The expression of PD-1 correlated with better survival. The expression of PD-1 could be a potential prognostic marker in TSCC. Further research using larger sample size is needed.Bendamustine and rituximab (BR) are widely used in patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) previously treated with conventional immunochemotherapy, but the role of consolidation radioimmunotherapy in these patients is unknown. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of consolidation with 90 Yttrium-ibritumomab tiuxetan (90 Y-IT) after re-induction therapy with BR in patients with previously treated FL. This study included adult patients with relapsed FL who had undergone one or two prior therapies. Re-induction therapy with BR was administered every 4 weeks up to 4-6 cycles. If patients achieved at least partial response, 90 Y-IT was administered as consolidation therapy. The primary endpoint was 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) after consolidation. A total of 24 FL patients (median age 60 years) who had undergone one (n = 17) or two (n = 7) prior treatments received BR. After BR therapy, 22 patients proceeded to consolidation with 90 Y-IT, resulting in an overall 88% response rate to the protocol treatment.
