The aim of this study was to assess the peripheral circulation using the laser speckle flowgraph (LSFG) which can quantitatively measure the ocular blood flow. click here We implanted a centrifugal CF-LVAD (EVAHEART®; Sun Medical Technology Research Corporation, Nagano, Japan) in five adult goats (body weight 44.5 ± 2.9 kg) under general anesthesia. The waveform of the central retinal artery using the mean blur rate (MBR) for ocular blood velocity and fluctuations as a parameter of pulsatility were obtained before LVAD implantation and after LVAD full-bypass support. The MBR waveform and LSFG fluctuation data were compared with the waveform and pulsatility index of the external carotid artery using an ultrasonic flow meter to evaluate circulatory patterns at different levels. The MBR waveform pattern of the central retinal artery was pulsatile before LVAD implantation and less pulsatile under LVAD full bypass. The fluctuation was 14.7 ± 1.86 before LVAD implantation and 3.85 ± 0.61 under LVAD full bypass (p  less then  0.01), respectively. The fluctuations of LSFG showed a strong correlation with the pulsatility index of the external carotid artery meaning that similar changes in circulatory pattern were observed at two different levels. Measuring the ocular blood flow using LSFG has potential utility for the assessment of the status of the peripheral circulation and its pulsatility during CF-LVAD.The advent of genome editing has opened new avenues for targeted trait enhancement in fruit, ornamental, industrial, and all specialty crops. In particular, CRISPR-based editing systems, derived from bacterial immune systems, have quickly become routinely used tools for research groups across the world seeking to edit plant genomes with a greater level of precision, higher efficiency, reduced off-target effects, and overall ease-of-use compared to ZFNs and TALENs. CRISPR systems have been applied successfully to a number of horticultural and industrial crops to enhance fruit ripening, increase stress tolerance, modify plant architecture, control the timing of flower development, and enhance the accumulation of desired metabolites, among other commercially-important traits. As editing technologies continue to advance, so too does the ability to generate improved crop varieties with non-transgenic modifications; in some crops, direct transgene-free edits have already been achieved, while in others, T-DNAs have successfully been segregated out through crossing. While many challenges remain regarding optimization of genome editing in ornamental, fruit, and industrial crops, the ongoing discovery of novel nucleases with niche specialties for engineering applications may form the basis for additional and potentially crop-specific editing strategies.Network analytic techniques examine how items used to measure underlying constructs are related to one another and identify core characteristics. While many studies have examined the covariance of callous-unemotional (CU) traits or features and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms, the inter-item relations of these constructs and the core characteristics of the CU construct are unclear. The present study aimed to examine the network connectivity of, and between, CU features and CD symptoms. We also examined both parent-reports and youth self-reports and gender differences. CU features and CD symptoms were rated by parents (n = 814; 74% mothers; age 23-73, M age = 43.86, SD = 8.13) and their child (n = 608; 57% female; age 7-19, M age = 13.98, SD = 2.36). Network plots depicted greater connectivity (i.e., density and weights) for CU features relative to CD symptoms across both informants. However, youth-reported CU features and CD symptoms were less densely connected than parent-reports. Items commonly comprising the callousness subscale were more central and linked the two constructs together, relative to uncaring items, across informant and gender. Gender related effects indicated lower centrality for male versus female youth, and this finding was particularly evident in youth-reports. Our findings highlight relations between CU features and CD symptoms, and point to the importance of callousness items in conceptualizations of CU features among high-risk youth from both the perspective of the parent and child. We also inform understanding of gender differences in CU features for which the literature is currently limited.
Our aim was to assess if the radiotherapy dose decreased the melatonin levels as well as the quality of life and sleep in brain tumor patients.
We performed a follow-up study on melatonin levels in saliva and its urinary metabolite sulfatoxi-melatonine (STM) samples in patients with brain tumors treated with radiotherapy close to the pineal gland's area. We analyzed the cortisol, cortisone, and excrection of STM normalized by urinary creatinine. In some cases, a polysomnography (PSG) was performed. Quality of life questionnaires, distress scale, and sleepiness inventories were also administered.
We included twelve patients (experimental arm) and eight healthy controls (control group). No differences were observed between experimental arm and control group at baseline. No differences were detected in the experimental arm before and after delivering the radiotherapy. No clinically significant differences were found according to the radiotherapy dose delivered.
Melatonin levels and PSG outcomes do not change after receiving radiotherapy.
