Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned earlier recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
