Requirements
Upgrades to items give players the ability to boost certain stats of weapons and armor that they currently have equipped. The requirements for upgrading an item will differ based on the type of item, but you'll typically need Dilithium along with the number of Upgrade tokens.
The items can be upgraded by adding upgrade components to equipment and weapons. These will provide additional effects or an increase in level of the item. These upgrades can be gotten from various sources in the game, including crafting, purchased at the Trading Post or karma vendors, looted from bosses and raids, or collected from dungeons. Once an upgrade component has been inserted into an object, it cannot be removed or replaced. However it is possible to swap glyphs freely.

Certain items are better off being upgraded less for their increased stats, but more for the fact that it allows players to get the most value from a perfect roll on the item. A perfectly rolled 200/6500 armor set piece, for example, is highly valued by melee PvP communities and can be worth as much as 20-50 times that of the unupp'd version.
