How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
