The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure the future generations could read the words. Many words were replaced with foreign words. For instance dui, which was Bengali for verandah was being used.
Origins
Toto's early history, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in a continuous flow. he has a good point pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding its operations overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than typical models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It has exhibitions on Toto's most famous products and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing, and even bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products that are sold across the world. The museum also has a bathroom with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto the band, members of the group did session work for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name like Asia you'd think that the group would be prog kings and queens - but it's actually a fairly straightforward rock group. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to deliver. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experiences since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens up hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also contains more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and should sound like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was busy with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
