Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums and was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities.
