Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all Toto's original members were on stage together. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
