Path of Exile Item Upgrades
The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading them. They can be a good source of damage or more AD or even more attaches.
Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on weapons and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they are attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items that have upgrade components within them by using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.
The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon can absorb depends on the degree of upgrades. The absorption of damage by an armor piece will increase as it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be heavier.
There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor an extra number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The type of armor upgrade that an item will receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade, as shown in the table below.
Some upgrades also feature magic or a mix of technology and magic which is shown by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges in order to be used. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades change every day or never expire, depending on the upgrade.
The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the environment and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available from smelters located in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant boost to stats and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.
The player must be aware, however, that upgrading a piece up to the maximum upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it can also reduce the speed and agility of the piece. Therefore, it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces beyond +9, since the defensive boost gained is typically not worth the weight and power cost of the improvements required.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance, an upgrade may improve the damage that is caused by the shells of a shotgun or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain firearms also have enhancements that enhance their intrinsic characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, minimizes the possibility of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.
Most weapon upgrades require three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade for applying. These can be obtained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain amount of bosses and monsters.
The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price of a set number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be less.
In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets has changed a bit. In the past you could go to an Upgrade Bench and pay for a specific amount of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to an increased level of rarity. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would reset.
This is still possible, but it relies heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a greater likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.
Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they use most frequently to help them level up faster. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates use to boost their strength. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to enhance its effectiveness when accompanied by biotech specialists such as Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels can be used to increase the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in armor and weapons. Jewelry crafting is a method of making them, where you combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the grade of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.
The Jeweler can enhance the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the level of the jewel, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.
All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get the privilege of having them. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped out with another jewel of the same type without damaging it. However you can only swap out a jewel in an item of equipment once.
Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it more smooth and is typically used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and make a harder surface than metal so that repeated friction from pivots does not damage them.
In addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the player can also get glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost in power and can be swapped, but they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis cannot be swapped, and can only be retrieved with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging using Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage.
Trinkets
Trinkets can be used to give your character various small, but beneficial, advantages. They are available in the starting area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained from vendors and by completing road interaction. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post.
The first trinket players will be able to unlock is the cloak. our source provides a tiny but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. After that, they can acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same manner to the way a player acquires armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with certain types of trinkets.
These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets a hero be more efficient when they are not active. It can also make up for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree which are usually filled by a hero's top stats.
A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item that is being upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, since it's generally more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.
At the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their trinket to a red, while top and middle players will usually opt for the pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices will have a major impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.
Aside from the items listed above, players may also find other items in the form of trophies and awards. These can be obtained by completing certain milestones within the story, for instance completing a chapter's main quest or killing a certain boss. You can view them by clicking on the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
