However, it is unclear that EOMS is related to muscle damage markers on prolonged running. This study aimed to determine at which point EOMS, and muscle damage markers are related to EOMS during prolonged running. METHODS We studied 11 male subjects who habitually perform aerobic exercise. They ran 30 km at 90% of ventilatory threshold intensity. Every 10 km, we estimated perceived muscle soreness, and sampled blood to measure muscle and liver damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress (d-ROM and BAP) markers. RESULTS Muscle soreness score lower limbs were significantly appeared at 20 km compared to that at 0 km. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level increased at 30 km compared to that at 0 km. LDH isoenzymes 3, 4, and 5, and neutrophils significantly increased at 30 km compared to those at 0 km. Serum LDH isoenzyme 5 and change in aspartate aminotransferase significantly increased at 20 km. In addition, there was a significant correlation between the thigh NRS and amount of serum LDH isoenzyme 5 from 0 km to 20 km. d-ROM and BAP increased at 10 km compared to those at 0 km. Our data suggest that LDH isoenzyme 5 is a marker of occurrence in EOMS during prolonged running.BACKGROUND We aimed to examine the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), static strength and explosive strength with cognitive functions in young males. METHODS Eighty-six young males (age 16-24 years) participated in the study and took part in a number of tests including static strength (grip strength test), explosive strength (Sargent jump test), and CRF (via direct measure of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)). Static strength and explosive strength were scaled by allometrically modeled skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and height while VO2max was scaled by SMM and body mass (BM). Cognition was assessed by inhibitory control, simple and choice reaction time tasks using computerized Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Battery (CANTAB). Central processing time was measured by surface electromyography changes in isometric contraction response to an audio stimulus. RESULTS VO2max scaled by BM (but not SMM), was associated with better central processing time and stop-signal reaction time (SSRT). Explosive strength was also associated with better central processing time independent of VO2max. However, static strength was not associated with cognition. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that explosive strength is a better predictor of central processing than static strength or VO2max in young males. Longitudinal studies are needed to examine whether explosive strength training in youth would improve central processing time.We aimed to evaluate the effects of stage-matched repeated individual behavioural counselling (RIBCS) on the basis of the transtheoretical model (TTM) as an intervention to reduce and stop smoking. This study was conducted over a period of one year where all smokers presenting to a chest clinic in a tertiary centre were enrolled, each was classified on the basis of stage of readiness to change and underwent repeated counselling for a period of six months and each session was preceded and succeeded with filling of Fagerstorm test for nicotine dependence. Over the period of a year, 207 patients participated in this study, the mean age was 50.74±14.74 years; mean duration of tobacco use was 29.43±14.72 years; 64.3% were illiterate, 11.6% primary education, 14.1% were matric and while 10.1% were graduate. About 73% of smokers reported high level of nicotine dependence (FTND score &gt;5/10). In the present study mean dependence score was 6.0±1.96; 44 (21.3%) were in pre-contemplation stage, 93 (44.9%) were in contemplation, 57 (27.5%) were in preparation and 13 (6.3%) were in action.
