Despite challenges, epilepsy clinicians spontaneously expressed stress, empathy, and commitment to providing the best possible care.<br />The aim of this study was to determine whether gender influences the prediction of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in persons with newly diagnosed epilepsy (NDE).<br />This was a 1-year longitudinal study. Persons with NDE were assessed with the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), the Stigma Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with interaction terms was used.<br />Among 134 adults with NDE, there were no gender differences in the scores of the QOLIE-31 and its subscales. A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the HADS-anxiety scores at diagnosis (p = 0.005) and seizure recurrence after diagnosis (p = 0.050) negatively predicted QOLIE-31 scores in persons with NDE. There were significant effects of the gender interaction with seizure recurrence (F = 8.745, p = 0.004, partial eta<br /> = 0.066) and antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy (F = 6.320, p = 0.013, partial eta<br /> = 0.049) in the adjusted model. Specifically, seizure recurrence negatively predicted the QOLIE-31 scores only in men. Electrocorticography (ECoG) data were downloaded daily during a three-month baseline, then every 2-3 days over a five-month treatment period. This study investigated the burden perceived by parents of AWE and described the explanatory factors.<br />An equal number (n = 121) of age- and gender-matched parent caregivers of AWE (cases) and parents of adolescents with sickle cell disease (comparison group) were interviewed with the Parent Illness Intrusiveness Rating Scale to assess disruptions in their relationships and lifestyle. Parents of AWE were assessed for psychological distress with the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, and AWE were interviewed with the Hospital Depression-Anxiety Scale.<br />The majority of the cases and the comparison group were mothers (76%), with mean (SD) ages of 44.11 (SD = 6.92) versus 43.59 (SD = 6.39) years, respectively. A culturally sensitive interdisciplinary blueprint of locally viable actions model for psychosocial support for parent caregivers of AWE is strongly suggested. Future studies are indicated to shed more light on the modifiable risks of perceived burden, and the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in parents of AWE.<br />Acceptance of disability (AOD) is a key concept in rehabilitation psychology that enhances psychosocial adjustment of individuals with disability. However, the impact of AOD on well-being has never been examined for patients with epilepsy. The present study investigated whether AOD affects quality of life (QOL) in patients with epilepsy in the presence of other multiple aspects of epilepsy based on the biopsychosocial model.<br />We retrospectively reviewed 151 consecutive patients with epilepsy (77 men, aged 18-74 years) who underwent comprehensive assessment including long-term video-EEG monitoring, neuroimaging studies, and neuropsychological and psychosocial assessment in our epilepsy monitoring unit. Data were obtained from medical records and self-reported questionnaires. The outcome variable was QOL. Predictive variables included demographic characteristics, seizure-related variables (i.e., duration of epilepsy, seizure frequency, and number of antiepileptic drugs), psychological factors (i.e., AOD, depevealed AOD as an important psychological concept, in addition to social support and depression as previously reported, to improve the QOL of patients with epilepsy. Acceptance of disability should be incorporated in the intervention to increase QOL of patients with epilepsy.<br />Waiting lists occur when the availability of speech-language pathology services does not meet the demand. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) commonly manage waiting lists and their consequences using prioritization.<br />The aims of this study were to (1) describe speech-language pathology waiting lists for children and factors associated with their presence in workplaces throughout the world, and (2) describe factors considered in and influencing SLPs' prioritization of children for services.<br />A questionnaire about pediatric waiting lists and prioritization was completed by 267 SLPs from 10 countries working in health, disability, education, and private sectors. Females have greater neuropathology (AD biomarkers and brain atrophy rates) and cognitive decline than males, however these effects can depend on diagnosis (amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) or AD) and APOE genotype (presence of ε4 alleles). Using the ADNI database (N = 630 females, N = 830 males), we analyzed the effect of sex, APOE genotype (non-carriers or carriers of APOEε4 alleles), and diagnosis (cognitively normal (CN), early aMCI (EMCI), late aMCI (LMCI), probable AD) on cognition (memory and executive function), hippocampal volume, and AD biomarkers (CSF levels of amyloid beta, tau, and ptau). Regardless of APOE genotype, memory scores were higher in CN, EMCI, and LMCI females compared to males but this sex difference was absent in probable AD, which may suggest a delay in the onset of cognitive decline or diagnosis and/or a faster trajectory of cognitive decline in females. We found that, regardless of diagnosis, CSF tau-pathology was disproportionately elevated in female carriers of APOEε4 alleles compared to males. In contrast, male carriers of APOEε4 alleles had reduced levels of CSF amyloid beta compared to females, irrespective of diagnosis. We also detected sex differences in hippocampal volume but the direction was dependent on the method of correction. Using an integrity based RT-qPCR assay this study led to the discovery that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can persist under several forms in wastewaters, which provides important information on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in raw wastewaters and associated risk assessment.
